Volunteering
Volunteers have been part of Bethany Care Society since the very beginning. Founded by volunteers in 1945, Bethany continues to be strengthened by people who generously share their time, skills, and presence — gifts that are deeply valued by residents, tenants, families, and employees alike.
Volunteering at Bethany is about connection. It’s about spending time with residents, supporting meaningful activities, and being part of daily life in a place people call home. Whether you’re visiting, assisting with programs, or lending a helping hand, your presence makes a real difference.

Mealtime Companions help create a positive, supportive dining experience for residents by offering one-on-one assistance and friendly conversation during meals. Volunteers follow individual dietary guidelines, support residents with eating, and work alongside care employees to ensure meals are safe and comfortable. Beyond practical support, this role provides meaningful social interaction that helps residents feel engaged and valued. Shifts typically align with scheduled mealtimes and allow volunteers to build trust and connection.
Pet Visitor
Pet Visitors and their well-behaved companions bring comfort, joy, and companionship to residents through calm, friendly interaction. Volunteers follow Bethany’s safety guidelines, ensure their pet is clean and under control, and respect each resident’s comfort level. Visits take place in designated areas and focus on gentle engagement that brightens someone’s day. This role offers a simple but powerful way to foster connection and belonging.
Spiritual Care Volunteer
Spiritual Care Volunteers provide a compassionate presence that helps residents feel comforted and supported. Through conversation, quiet companionship, music, reading, or prayer, volunteers honour each person’s beliefs and preferences. This inclusive role respects diverse faith traditions and creates space for reflection and connection. Regular visits help build meaningful relationships grounded in dignity and respect.
Recreation & Occupational Therapy Volunteer
Recreation & Occupational Therapy Volunteers support activities that keep residents physically active, socially engaged, and connected to community life. Volunteers assist with programs such as games, creative activities, exercise, and special events, while encouraging participation and conversation. This active role involves working alongside employees to help create vibrant, engaging experiences that enhance residents’ quality of life.
Quality of Life Ambassador
Quality of Life Ambassadors offer meaningful one-on-one companionship tailored to a resident’s interests. Volunteers may talk, listen to music, play games, do crafts, use sensory tools, or go for short walks. By visiting regularly and building relationships, volunteers help reduce loneliness and bring comfort and joy to residents’ daily lives.
