Spiritual Health Awareness Week: Jerry’s Story

"It's the people at Bethany who will stay with me as I leave, and it's my hope that as I enter these senior years, I will follow the good examples I've been blessed to be exposed to."

As we recognize Spiritual Health Awareness Week (October 26–30, 2026), we’re celebrating the important role our Spiritual Care Program plays in supporting meaning, hope, purpose, and connection.

At Bethany, we recognize that wholistic care goes beyond physical needs. Our Spiritual Care Practitioners play an important role in this approach, supporting residents, families, and employees through spiritual counselling, grief and bereavement support, and compassionate guidance through life’s challenges and transitions.

For Jerry, a Spiritual Care Practitioner at Bethany CollegeSide and Bethany Sylvan Lake, the relationships he’s built have been among the most meaningful parts of his work.

As Jerry prepares to retire at the end of October, he’s reflecting on his time at Bethany and the people who have left a lasting impression on him.

A Career Shaped by Connection

Throughout his time at Bethany, Jerry has offered a listening ear and provided comfort and support to people navigating end-of-life experiences. He’s also brought joy through music and especially enjoyed dressing up as Santa at Christmas.

When reflecting on his career, Jerry’s thoughts turn not to what he’s contributed, but to what he’s gained from those around him.

“What I prefer to talk about is how residents, families and staff have shaped me,” he shares.

Jerry recalls witnessing remarkable resilience and strength as residents, families, and care teams navigated life’s challenges together.

He’s particularly grateful for the dedication of Bethany’s care staff, who continue to create moments of joy and belonging for residents, even during difficult times.

“I’ve seen impromptu dance parties, jokes and storytelling and laughter on units,” Jerry reflects. “Staff do it out of love and the belief that people deserve respect and care at this stage of life.”

These moments have stayed with Jerry, reinforcing the importance of kindness, dignity, and human connection.

Carrying the Lessons Forward

As Jerry looks ahead to retirement, he acknowledges that leaving behind the people and relationships that have shaped his career brings mixed emotions. But above all, he carries with him a deep appreciation for the Bethany community.

“It’s the people at Bethany who will stay with me as I leave, and it’s my hope that as I enter these senior years, I will follow the good examples I’ve been blessed to be exposed to.”

Jerry’s reflections are a meaningful reminder of this year’s Spiritual Health Awareness Week theme, Spiritual Health Matters, and the importance of the relationships and experiences that give our lives meaning.

We also take this opportunity to celebrate Jerry for the empathy, dedication, and compassionate presence he has brought to residents, families, and colleagues throughout his career.

Congratulations on your retirement, Jerry, and thank you for the difference you’ve made in our Bethany community.
