As Bethany celebrates Seniors’ Week and this year’s theme of 40 Years of Connection, Contribution, and Community, we are proud to recognize tenants who help create vibrant and caring communities within our Housing sites every day.
Neil, and his wife Jean, have called Mikkelsen House home for the past five years. As President of the Social Committee, Neil plays an active role in helping foster connection, inclusion, and community spirit among tenants.
Drawing on nearly 40 years of experience in Property Management, Neil works closely with Bethany employees and fellow tenants to help enhance daily life within the building. Through the Social Committee, he helps organize daily coffee gatherings, monthly dinners, movie nights, games, holiday celebrations, outings, and intergenerational events with community partners such as Summit Kids.

Neil has also partnered with local businesses to provide affordable celebratory meals for tenants and helped raise funds to refurbish the second-floor games room, creating a welcoming space where tenants can gather, socialize, and enjoy friendly competition.
For Neil, one of the greatest benefits of living at Mikkelsen House is the sense of community and independence it provides.
“This is a safe, positive and caring environment for me and my wife,” says Neil. “Being here gives peace of mind to my children, knowing that we are being well looked after.”
Neil also shared his appreciation for Bethany’s support in helping tenants age in place while maintaining meaningful social connections and independence.
“Bethany has provided a safe and caring environment that fosters growth and inclusion of everyone,” he says. “The tenants are comfortable, create lasting friendships, and can maintain our autonomy.”
Neil and Jean are now also preparing to volunteer at one of Bethany’s long-term care centres, continuing their commitment to building connection and community across Bethany.
Thank you to Neil, Jean, and all those who help make Bethany’s communities welcoming places to live, connect, and thrive.
