As we celebrate Seniors’ Week and this year’s theme of 40 Years of Connection, Contribution, and Community, we’re proud to recognize residents who help make Bethany’s communities welcoming places to live, connect, and thrive.
Arlene has called Bethany’s Kanerva House home for the past five years. After her mother spent time living at Kanerva House, Arlene was encouraged to make the community her home as well.
Today, Arlene is an active volunteer and a familiar face within the building. She serves on several resident committees, including Social, Gardening, and External Entertainment, helping organize activities and opportunities for connection throughout the year. She also plays an important role in coordinating birthday celebrations, farewell gatherings, memorial services, and card and board game activities for fellow residents.
For Arlene, Kanerva House is more than a place to live. It is a community where people look out for one another through initiatives such as the building’s buddy system, helping tenants stay connected and supported.
“I want to help create a community where people can feel like they belong,” says Arlene. “My goal is to merge the various ethnic, cultural, social, and religious groups into one holistic group where there are no barriers to involvement and participation.”

Arlene credits Bethany employees and the strong sense of community within the building for helping tenants feel informed, safe, and supported as they age in place. She is especially grateful for the support provided by Bethany employees, including the Social Worker, Recreation Therapist, Chaplain, and Maintenance team, who help ensure residents have access to the resources and assistance they need.
She also appreciates Kanerva House’s convenient location, with nearby shopping, amenities, and public transit right outside the building, helping tenants maintain their independence and stay connected to the broader community.
Thank you, Arlene, and our seniors for helping create a caring community where everyone feels welcome, connected, and valued.
