At Bethany CollegeSide in Red Deer, Alberta, you’ll often find Bryan at the front desk with a big smile and a warm welcome for anyone walking through the door. A resident and volunteer in the Young Adult program for more than 12 years, he is known for his kindness, humour and infectious enthusiasm.
Bryan was born five months early, weighing just 1 pound 15 ounces. Doctors didn’t expect him to survive — but Bryan has been defying odds ever since. Though he has never walked, his determination has carried him far as he embraces life at Bethany CollegeSide.
The Young Adult program at Bethany is one of only a few of its kind in Alberta — providing continuing care for people aged 18 to 64 who have complex medical needs that can’t be met elsewhere. With Bethany’s person-centred philosophy, the program goes beyond care — it creates a holistic, supportive environment while also providing a vibrant community and meaningful connections.
Bryan moved to Bethany CollegeSide 13 years ago and the community quickly became home. Bryan volunteers at the front desk, helps with events and takes part in community initiatives like packing Christmas bags for families in need. He loves going out for lunch, watching movies and spending time with the group he helped create — “The Bad Boys of Bethany.”
Bryan shares that the employees are what he values most at Bethany, “They are wonderful and warm.” He especially enjoys time with his mother and brother in the accessible courtyard — an outdoor space made possible through donor support. “It benefits all residents to get fresh air and visit their loved ones.”
